Embracing the Outdoors: SISOG in the Forest
Once a month, our Primary students embark on an exciting excursion to anearby stunning outdoor space that serves as both a classroom and a playground. These outings are more than just a day in the woods; they are a vital part of our educational program, blending structured activities with child-led exploration. This unique approach allows children to learn through play, build resilience, and develop a deep respect and love for nature.
The Joy of Learning Outdoors
Our visits to the forest offer a perfect blend of learning and fun. Whether it’s the winter months, when we spend the morning in the crisp, snowy landscape, or the warmer seasons, when the entire school day is spent amidst the vibrant colours of the forest, each trip provides invaluable experiences. The activities range from building gigantic snowmen using levers, to navigating the forest with maps, reenacting classic tales like “Billy Goat Gruff,” or even searching for mythical trolls hidden among the trees. Every month, we witness the children growing more confident, tackling greater challenges, and immersing themselves in the natural world with increasing enthusiasm.
Why We Do This: The Swedish Curriculum’s Perspective
Our monthly excursions are deeply rooted in the principles of the Swedish curriculum. The curriculum emphasises the importance of outdoor activities in the local environment, stating that pupils should be given opportunities to develop their motor skills through physical activities and interactions with nature. These experiences are crucial in fostering a love for movement and an understanding of the benefits of an active lifestyle.
According to the curriculum, positive experiences of outdoor life during childhood are essential for maintaining physical activity later in life. By engaging in outdoor activities, students are not only developing their physical abilities but also learning about the importance of health, safety, and respect for nature. The curriculum encourages teaching that helps pupils understand the value of outdoor life across different seasons and environments. This approach ensures that our students acquire the skills needed to navigate and enjoy outdoor settings while being mindful of safety and the well-being of others.
Preparing for the Adventure
To ensure that the children can fully enjoy and benefit from these outdoor adventures, it’s important that they come prepared. Appropriate clothing is key to a comfortable and stimulating day. Whether it’s layering up for a snowy day or dressing light for warmer weather, the right attire makes all the difference in their ability to explore and learn.
Each trip to the forest is a chance for children to engage in some of their most creative and meaningful learning experiences. These moments of discovery, challenge, and joy are what make our monthly excursions so special. We look forward to seeing the students continue to grow, learn, and have fun in the beautiful outdoor space so close to our school in Meyrin.
